Gayane Shagoyan is a cultural anthropologist and holds a PhD in History/Cultural anthropology. She is currently a Senior Researcher at the Department of Cultural Anthropology at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, where she has worked since 1995. She also teaches at Yerevan State University.
Since 1994–1995, she has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork using oral history methodologies. From 2017 to 2019, she headed the Oral History Center at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography. She has participated in around 50 research projects and authored more than 100 academic publications. She is also the editor of Unheard Voices: Memory and Postmemory in Oral Histories (2018).
Her research focuses on memory studies, forced displacement, Soviet repressions, and the anthropology of crises.
