Crisis and Memory
A digital oral history research project dedicated to recording and preserving the experiences of communities affected by crises, with a particular focus on the forced displacement of Artsakh Armenians in 2023.
Project Overview
A number of studies on the themes of crisis and memory have been conducted by various research teams at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the NAS RA. As a result, a substantial body of research material has been accumulated, requiring systematic preservation, digitization, and processing through digital tools in accordance with ethical and legal standards. Recognizing the importance of consolidating these materials within a unified and sustainable institutional platform, the project team initiated the creation of a digital oral history database. The implementation of this initiative became possible through the establishment of the “Crisis and Memory: Digital Oral History Laboratory” project (25RL-6A038) within the framework of the Higher Education and Science Committee of the Republic of Armenia’s “Adjunct Research Professorship Program 2025” (Remote Laboratory). However, the laboratory’s activities extend beyond the creation of the database itself. It also aims to foster research capacities in oral history methodology through workshops, seminars, annual courses, and fieldwork initiatives. In addition, the project envisions the development and implementation of legal and ethical approaches to the collection, preservation, and use of field materials. The project promotes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of crises and memory by integrating anthropological and linguistic research with the contemporary possibilities of digital technologies.
Our Mission
Collection and systematic preservation of oral histories
We record, collect, and digitize the personal testimonies of individuals who have experienced crises, transforming them into a structured and sustainable digital heritage. We develop a searchable digital repository that ensures the secure preservation of oral histories and their accessibility in accordance with ethical, legal, and methodological standards.
Education and Outreach
We train early-career researchers and professionals in oral history methodology through ongoing seminars, courses, field practicums, and methodological guidelines. Our mission is to inspire interest in oral history and memory studies.
Development of research on memory and crises
Our mission is to study how communities remember, survive, and rebuild after a crisis, preserving their experiences as sources of knowledge, resilience, and historical understanding.
